Card 1 of a sample batch, made with the generator on this site.

Who it’s for

  • Birthday parties with several separate friend groups
  • Backyard parties, restaurant back rooms, or living-room gatherings
  • Milestone birthdays where family and friends meet
  • Surprise parties while everyone waits for the guest of honor

How to play

  1. Give each player a card and a pen. Players write their name at the top.
  2. Players talk to each other. When someone fits a square, that person signs it. Nobody signs their own card.
  3. By default each person can sign a card once and the first full row, column, or diagonal wins. In the generator you can allow two signatures or switch to “most squares in a set time.”
  4. Plan on about 15–20 minutes for a 4×4 card. That’s a suggestion; adjust it to your group.

Tips for hosting

  • At a surprise party, hand out cards as guests arrive; it gives everyone something to do while waiting.
  • Let the guest of honor play too, or ask them to be the official tiebreaker and sign any card once.
  • Edit the guest-of-honor squares to add an inside detail only close friends would know.
  • Wrap up before cake so the winner can be announced while everyone is gathered anyway.

Questions

Are there jokes about getting older?

No. The prompts skip age jokes and stereotypes, so the card works for any birthday, from a 25th to an 80th.

Can I add prompts about the birthday person?

Yes. Edit any prompt or add your own, like where they went to school or a trip you took together. More prompts give more variety across cards.

Is there anything about drinking on the cards?

No. Nothing on the card asks guests to drink, so it suits any party, whether or not drinks are served.
