Card 1 of a sample batch, made with the generator on this site.

Who it’s for

  • Team offsites & retreats, in a meeting room or outdoors
  • Planning days that need a warm-up before the agenda
  • Teams of 15–50 that know each other a little but not well
  • Kicking off a multi-day event on the first morning

How to play

  1. Give each player a card and a pen. Players write their name at the top.
  2. Players talk to each other. When someone fits a square, that person signs it. Nobody signs their own card.
  3. By default each person can sign a card once and the first full row, column, or diagonal wins. In the generator you can allow two signatures or switch to “most squares in a set time.”
  4. Plan on about 15–20 minutes for a 4×4 card. That’s a suggestion; adjust it to your group.

Tips for hosting

  • Run it as the first item on day one, before any presentations; it gets people moving and talking after travel.
  • At a multi-day retreat, hand out cards on day one and finish on day two, using "Most squares in a set time" with a deadline such as lunch.
  • Pick out three or four squares at the end and ask the signers for the story, such as the team memory that still makes them laugh.
  • If your team splits into tables or breakout groups later, mix people up based on who signed each other's cards.

Printing

  • Pack cards, pens, and something hard to write on, like clipboards or folded cardboard, in case the venue has no tables in the mingling area.
  • Print cards before you travel; venue printers are often slow or unavailable.
  • Use 1 card per page on Letter or A4 if people will carry their card around all day, since a full sheet is easier to keep track of.
  • Print at 100% (“Actual size”). More detail in How to print bingo cards on US Letter or A4.

Questions

Does this work for a team that already knows each other well?

Yes. Many prompts ask about things coworkers rarely discuss, like who has cooked for a crowd or who once sang in a choir, so even close teams usually learn something new.

Can we play it outdoors at a retreat?

Yes. Nothing on the card needs equipment or a screen. Bring clipboards and pencils (they work better than pens in damp or cold weather).

Is there anything physical or athletic on the card?

No. Prompts about outdoor time or games are things people may have done casually, and no square asks anyone to perform a stunt or show off a skill on the spot.
